A Place of Healing – A Voice of Hope.

LYDIA'S LADLE

Support the women of Lydia’s House with hand-crafted pies from Lydia’s Ladle.

Lydia’s Ladle empowers and employs women who are victims of domestic violence by providing safe, confidentially located work placement. After fleeing from violence, women face many barriers to achieving financial independence: lack of employable job skills, an absence of job references and a gap in employment history. At Lydia’s Ladle, these women gain work experience, make contacts for future job references and learn skills to work in the food industry under USDA guidelines. Employment at the Ladle creates an immediate source of income for domestic violence survivors.

Help us provide job training for women who have fled from domestic violence by purchasing Chicken Pot Pies and Very Berry Pies from Lydia’s Ladle. Proceeds from Lydia’s Ladle pies directly support the women of Lydia’s House. Purchase frozen pies at a store near you to heat and enjoy.

The Story of Lydia’s Ladle

Our social enterprise kitchen was first inspired by a social worker and a local farmer. A woman who worked with Lydia’s House, introduced us to a local farmer.  He generously offered to donate eggs and vegetables from his garden for the women and children of Lydia’s House. And then the President & CEO of Lydia’s House, identified an opportunity to employ single mothers by creating something delicious from these donated goods.

Lydia’s Ladle was officially launched in 2013 with help from volunteers and donors, based in a shared-use kitchen at Saint Louis University (SLU). Operating hours were designed around a traditional school schedule, to better accommodate the needs of single mothers who are the sole caregiver for their family after fleeing from domestic violence.

In 2014, Lydia’s House held a contest among St. Louis-area chefs to develop a pot pie recipe for Lydia’s Ladle. The winning recipe came from Lou Rook III, executive chef at Annie Gunn’s Restaurant in Chesterfield, Mo., and a final version of the recipe was developed. Lydia’s Ladle completed the USDA approval process and celebrated the first pot pies arriving in grocery stores in 2015.

Due to overwhelming response and support from local grocers, Lydia’s Ladle moved into its own kitchen and developed an additional product: a Very Berry Pie, with a cream cheese crust.
