A Place of Healing – A Voice of Hope.

Clara’s Story of Hope & Healing

My name is Clara and I have two children. I got married in India in 2005. We did fight, but not more than a normal married couple. His temper got worse, and our fights became more frequent and more violent. We wanted to leave India, so we moved our family to the United States, hoping that we could start a new life. When we got to America, things were going really well for us and our children. We both got a job at his uncle’s hotel. In 2017, the fights and abuse began happening once again. His uncle walked in on him beating me and I begged for his help. He helped me and suggested that I go back to India to give my husband some space. How could I leave my children and my job behind?

My Lydia’s House advocate helped me file for divorce and for custody of my children.”
The abuse continued. I was able to talk to a co-worker, and she gave me the phone number for an emergency shelter, who then introduced me to Lydia’s House. That is when my life turned around. My Lydia’s House advocate helped me file for divorce and for custody of my children. She also helped me with my English and I filed for U.S. citizenship. I began my new job at Lydia’s Ladle, where I could work happily, knowing I was safe. Lydia’s Ladle taught me the skills I needed to advance my career and I am working at a large hospital in the area. Thanks to my advocate and Lydia’s House, I am now a U.S. citizen! I will forever be grateful for Lydia’s House!
